About Map Dragons

Map Dragons is written and produced by Betsy Mason and Greg Miller. We are science journalists who love maps and the stories behind them. In 2014 we founded a cartography blog at Wired called Map Lab. In 2016 the blog moved to National Geographic, where it was renamed All Over the Map. Our book of the same name was published by National Geographic in 2018.

Here, you will find a selection of our previous blog posts, stories we've written for a variety of other publications, and going forward, some Map Dragons exclusives. We hope you enjoy the site!

As an Amazon Associate, Map Dragons earns income from qualifying purchases made through links on this website.

Topographic map of Monte Alban, Oaxaca, Mexico. No wonder the Zapotec chose this spot for a city circa 500 BC. It feels like the top of the world. #montealban #oaxaca #mexico #map
